National Park Walk:
Located at one end of Park Hastings Street and also accessible from Sunshine Beach to the south, the park attracts bushwalkers, nature lovers, picnickers and surfers.
Set out on foot to follow one of the many tracks around the rocky headland. You’ll find some stunning hidden beaches along the way, with the park also featuring some amazing views of the coastline. Look out for resident wildlife, including bush turkeys (if you haven’t already seen them meandering around the Resort!) kookaburras, goannas and koalas. Between June and November, Humpback whales can be viewed as they cruise along the coastline. Grab a map of walking trails at the park Information Centre and wander along one of the easy to moderate walking tracks that wind along the coast, through rainforest and open woodlands. Longer tracks lead out through open forest where a great variety of wildflowers can be observed in winter and spring. The coastal track from the park Information centre to Dolphin Point is paved and suitable for assisted wheelchair and stroller access. Toilet facilities at the park are also wheelchair accessible.
Wolngarin:
The Developer of Wolngarin was from North Queensland, and named the Resort “Wolngarin” after an Island off the coast near Mission Beach. Wolngarin is part of “The Family group of Islands” which were discovered in 1770 by Captain James Cook. The largest of the islands he named “The Father Isle”, now Dunk Island, the 2nd largest island he named “The Mother Isle” now Bedarra Island and the smaller islands were the children, of which Wolngarin was one. Geographically, the island of Wolngarin lies just off Dunk Island, the largest of the group, and is not much more than an isolated rock mass known locally as “the Forty-foot Rock”, however a list of local aboriginal place names for Dunk Island describes Wolngarin as “Palm with coconut-like fronds.”
